Here are some quotes from Yuzuru Hanyu's first book Aoi Honoo (Blue Flame)
published on April 7th. →Amazon JapanI picked up parts where I found interesting/hilarious/cute/impressive/moving etc, sorted them in chronological order and tried some translations.
Hope it makes sense and conveys at least a little bit of Yuzu's awesomeness.
Here we go! - I've always loved Plushenko since I was around 6 yo. He used to hold up the trophy high and show it to the audience on the podium. I imitated it pretending I was him, grinning wide with toothless mouth lol
- I started skating because it was so much fun, but as the training became harder I started to hate it. But right after I won at Japanese novice nats when I was 10, my home rink in Sendai closed down and I had to train at farther rinks for the next 3 years. Many kids quit skating during this time. That was when I realized that training is so valuable. I started to really love skating. I knew I couldn't live without it.
(It was during this period he lost to his rivals of the same age, Hino and Tanaka)
- 2010 summer: I, too, think men should do quad, but the result of Vancouver Olympics was convincing for me. Evan avoided quad but it was comfortable to watch him skate, everything was perfect in that particular performance, while Plushenko's jumps were a bit shaky and his quad wasn't likely to get +goe. However Sochi won't be like that. You'll neet quad AND perfect skating.
- after 2010 COR: How mortifying! I don’t want to see EX, I just want to go back to Japan and train now! The most frustrating thing is I, the junior champ, lost to Gachinski, the junior 3rd! I’m angry with myself! Ugh I want to train hard right now!!
(He restarted training 10 days after the Great Earthquake on 3/11/2011 but was suffering from nightmarish memories of it. Then he saw Gachinski won blonze medal at 2011 worlds)
- Of course I got fired up! It was mortifying as hell, to be honest! I felt my winning juior worlds over him was wiped off by it. I was like "shit! why can't I land quad when he lands everything!" I couldn't sleep until 3am that night lol
(Being looked as a symbol of the disaster victims was stressful at first, but he began to acknowledge the fact that he had been supported by many people)
- I'm being helped by Jpop music too. I listened to it on my elder sister's ipod when I was in the evacuation center, crying big tears thinking a lot of things. And now, all these earthquake, training environment, rivals...they don't matter any more. I just have to fight with myself and do my best to aim high and achieve good results in order to convey my gratitude and to meet peolple's expectations.
- Building up stamina and perfecting my program as one piece of work are my current challenges. I think I can work this hard because I have good rivals. I admire Plushenko and Johnny. Plushenko always tells me "Beat me!" "Go beyond me!" He sometimes gives me advices on quad and biellmann spin. I heard he was scolded by his wife for it. Dai-chan and Patrick are two skaters who overmatch me. Particularly, no one can beat Patrick now, but I want to reach his level.
- I saw Jr worlds and was impressed with Han Yan & Jason. Especailly, Jason will be like Patrick if he gets 3A and quad. I want to fight with him.
- My biggest goal is to be an olympic champ, not at Sochi probably, but the next one. But before that, I want to be a world champ first and continue to win.
